The Shri Devaki Krishna Temple in Marcel (Mashel), Goa, stands as a unique and sacred site in India, being the only temple where Lord Krishna is worshipped alongside his mother, Devaki, in a singular representation known as Devaki-Krishna. Historical Significance

Originally located on Chorão Island (historically known as Choodamani or Chodan), the temple faced destruction during the Portuguese colonization in the early 16th century. To safeguard the deities from the Portuguese Inquisition, devotees relocated them to Mayem in Bicholim taluka between 1530 and 1540 CE. However, as Portuguese control expanded, the deities were moved again to Marcel, where the current temple was established in 1842.

Architectural and Iconographic Features

The temple's Garbha Griha (inner sanctum) houses a distinctive black stone idol depicting Devaki standing with infant Krishna nestled between her legs, a posture unparalleled in Hindu iconography. This representation captures the poignant moment when Devaki, after years of separation, reunites with her son Krishna, who assumes his infant form to rekindle their maternal bond.

Surrounding the main shrine are subsidiary temples dedicated to deities such as Bhumika Devi, Laxmi Ravalnath, Mallinath, Katyayani, Chodaneshwar, and Dhada Shankar, reflecting the temple's comprehensive spiritual significance.

Festivals and Rituals

The temple is a hub of vibrant festivities, with major celebrations including:

Krishna Janmashtami: Marked by unique rituals where a devotee enacts Devaki, and the birth of Krishna is symbolically celebrated with devotional songs and the swinging of a cradle containing baby Krishna.
Chikhal Kalo: A distinctive festival during Ashadha, where men and boys engage in playful mud games, symbolizing Krishna's childhood pranks.
Malni Purnima: Celebrated in the month of Paush, this festival involves elaborate rituals and attracts devotees from various regions.

Other significant festivals include Govardhan Puja, Bali Pratipada, Laxmi Pujan, Rathasaptami, and the Dashami-Ekadashi festival during Margashirsha.
