Moong Dal with Palak

A nutritious and comforting dal made with spinach and moong dal, perfect for a wholesome meal.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup split green gram lentil
  2. 3 cups chopped spinach
  3. A pinch of turmeric powder
  4. 1 tsp red chili powder
  5. 1 tsp asafoetida
  6. 2 tbsp butter
  7. 1 tsp chopped garlic
  8. 1 tsp chopped ginger
  9. A pinch of baking soda
  10. 1 tbsp fresh cream

Instructions

  1. **Prepare the Dal

    • Wash and soak the moong dal for 30 minutes.
    • Pressure cook the dal with turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, and enough water.
    • Once cooked, keep it aside.
    • If the dal seems thick or not dissolved, add water and cook again; mash lightly with a wooden spoon.
  2. **Prepare the Spinach

    • Boil water in a pan and add chopped spinach along with baking soda.
    • Cook for 1 minute on high flame until just done.
    • Drain, cool, blend into a smooth paste, and keep aside.
  3. **Combine and Temper

    • Add the spinach paste to the cooked dal and mix well; cook on low flame for 2 minutes and set aside.
    • Heat butter in a pan, add garlic and fry until light brown.
    • Add ginger and asafoetida; sauté briefly.
    • Add this tempering to the dal, mix thoroughly, and finish with fresh cream before serving.
