Coconut Chutney (Type 1)
A creamy and refreshing Coconut Chutney recipe — a South Indian favorite made with fresh coconut, yogurt, green chilies, and chana dal, perfect as a side for idli, dosa, and vada.
Ingredients
For the Chutney:
- 1 fresh coconut – grated
- 3 fresh green chilies – adjust to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)
- 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
- 1 tablespoon roasted split peas (chana dal)
- ¾ cup plain yogurt
- Salt – to taste
Method
Step 1: Blend the Chutney
- Add grated coconut, green chilies, cilantro, lemon juice, roasted chana dal, yogurt, and salt to a blender or mixer jar.
- Grind the mixture to a coarse or slightly chunky consistency. Add a little water if needed to ease blending.
Step 2: Adjust and Serve
- Taste and adjust the salt and spice level as desired.
- Serve fresh as a delicious accompaniment to dosa, idli, vada, or other South Indian tiffin items.
Tip
- Best enjoyed fresh, but can be refrigerated for up to 1 day.
- You can also temper with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and urad dal for added flavor.
