Coconut Chutney (Type 1)

A creamy and refreshing Coconut Chutney recipe — a South Indian favorite made with fresh coconut, yogurt, green chilies, and chana dal, perfect as a side for idli, dosa, and vada.

Ingredients

For the Chutney:

  • 1 fresh coconut – grated
  • 3 fresh green chilies – adjust to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon roasted split peas (chana dal)
  • ¾ cup plain yogurt
  • Salt – to taste

Method

  1. Blend the Chutney

    • Add grated coconut, green chilies, cilantro, lemon juice, roasted chana dal, yogurt, and salt to a blender or mixer jar.
    • Grind the mixture to a coarse or slightly chunky consistency. Add a little water if needed to ease blending.
  2. Adjust and Serve

    • Taste and adjust the salt and spice level as desired.
    • Serve fresh as a delicious accompaniment to dosa, idli, vada, or other South Indian tiffin items.

Tip

  • Best enjoyed fresh, but can be refrigerated for up to 1 day.
  • You can also temper with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and urad dal for added flavor.
