Coconut Chutney (Type 2)

A vibrant and herbaceous Coconut Chutney variation — this green, pesto-style chutney blends coconut, cilantro, ginger, and lemon for a fresh and zesty accompaniment to South Indian dishes.

Ingredients

For the Chutney:

  • 3 tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger – chopped
  • 1 fresh green chilli
  • ½ bunch fresh cilantro (coriander leaves) – stems and roots removed
  • Fresh lemon juice – to taste
  • Salt – to taste

Method

  1. Prepare the Ingredients

    • Rinse and roughly chop the cilantro, peel and chop the ginger, and slice the green chilli.
  2. Blend the Chutney

    • Add shredded coconut, ginger, green chilli, and cilantro to a blender or food processor.
    • Add lemon juice and a small amount of water (as needed) to assist blending.
  3. Adjust Seasoning

    • Blend into a smooth, pesto-like chutney.
    • Taste and adjust salt and lemon juice according to your preference.

Serving Suggestion

  • Serve this green coconut chutney fresh with dosa, idli, or South Indian snacks.
  • Best consumed immediately or within a few hours for optimal flavor and color.
