  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup shortening
  • Extra flour (for dusting hands)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:

    • Gradually mix in warm water to form a soft dough.
  2. Knead and Rest:

    • Dust your hands with flour and knead the dough until it is smooth and pliable, but not sticky.
    • Cover with a clean cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  3. Shape the Dough:

    • Divide the dough into balls about 2 inches in diameter.
    • Flatten each ball by patting and gently stretching into a disc.
  4. Heat the Shortening:

    • Melt shortening about an inch deep in a frying pan.
    • Heat until hot enough for frying.
  5. Fry the Bread:

    • Carefully place a flattened disc of dough in the hot shortening.
    • Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip and cook the other side until golden.
  6. Serve Warm:

    • Serve hot, topped with honey or powdered sugar for a sweet version.
    • For a savory twist, top with cooked sausage, beans, or a fried egg.

Crispy yet soft, Indian Fry Bread is versatile and delicious — perfect as a snack, side dish, or a base for creative toppings.
