Indian Fry Bread
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp powdered milk
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 cup shortening
- Extra flour (for dusting hands)
Method
- Put flour in a bowl, add baking powder, salt, and powdered milk.
- Mix in warm water to form a dough.
- Dust hands with flour and knead the dough until soft but not sticky.
- Cover with a cloth and let stand for 15 minutes.
- Shape the dough into balls about 2 inches across, then flatten by patting and stretching.
- Melt shortening about an inch deep in a frying pan.
- Fry the dough in hot shortening until golden brown on one side, then flip and fry the other side.
- Serve warm — top with honey, powdered sugar, or make it savory with cooked sausage or fried egg.
