Indian Fry Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp powdered milk
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup shortening
  • Extra flour (for dusting hands)

Method

  1. Put flour in a bowl, add baking powder, salt, and powdered milk.
  2. Mix in warm water to form a dough.
  3. Dust hands with flour and knead the dough until soft but not sticky.
  4. Cover with a cloth and let stand for 15 minutes.
  5. Shape the dough into balls about 2 inches across, then flatten by patting and stretching.
  6. Melt shortening about an inch deep in a frying pan.
  7. Fry the dough in hot shortening until golden brown on one side, then flip and fry the other side.
  8. Serve warm — top with honey, powdered sugar, or make it savory with cooked sausage or fried egg.
