Banana Chutney

Banana Chutney is a sweet and tangy condiment made with ripe bananas, spices, and a hint of tanginess.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas, peeled and chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust according to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon oil (such as vegetable or mustard oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or jaggery (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar (such as apple cider vinegar or white vinegar)
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped fresh coriander leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Ingredients:

    • Peel and chop the bananas. Finely chop the onion, green chilies, and ginger. Mince the garlic.
  2. Cook Banana Chutney:

    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add finely chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, and minced garlic to the pan. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
    • Stir in turmeric powder and red chili powder. Cook for another minute.
    • Add the chopped bananas to the pan and mix well with the spices.
    • Cook the bananas for a few minutes until they start to soften.
  3. Add Sweetener and Vinegar:

    • Add brown sugar or jaggery to the pan and mix well. Let it dissolve and caramelize slightly.
    • Stir in vinegar and mix everything together. Cook for a couple of minutes until the chutney thickens slightly.
  4. Season and Garnish:

    • Season the banana chutney with salt according to taste. Adjust sweetness and spiciness as needed.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves, if desired.
  5. Cool and Serve:

    • Allow the banana chutney to cool completely before transferring it to a serving bowl or jar.
    • Serve as a condiment or accompaniment to your favorite Indian dishes, snacks, sandwiches, or cheese platters.
