Daal Shorba

Daal Shorba is a flavorful lentil-based soup enriched with spices, paneer, and peas — simmered to perfection and served hot with roti, paratha, or rice.

Ingredients

For the Shorba:

  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 tomato – pureed
  • 3–4 garlic flakes
  • 1/2-inch piece ginger
  • 1–2 green chilies
  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 250 g paneer – cut into cubes
  • 2–3 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee

Spices:

  • Salt – to taste
  • Red chili powder – to taste
  • 3/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon garam masala

Method

Step 1: Fry the Paneer

  1. Cut paneer into cubes and fry until golden brown.
  2. Set aside for later use.

Step 2: Prepare the Masala Base

  1. Make a paste of onion, garlic, ginger, and green chilies using a mixer or chopper.
  2. Heat oil in a wok or kadai.
  3. Add the onion-garlic paste and fry until golden brown.

Step 3: Add Spices and Tomato

  1. Add salt, turmeric, coriander powder, and red chili powder (reserve garam masala for later).
  2. Fry for a minute, then add tomato puree.
  3. Cook until the mixture starts releasing oil.

Step 4: Cook the Gravy

  1. Add 1 cup of water and cook until the mixture thickens and reduces.
  2. Add the fried paneer cubes and green peas.
  3. Pour in another cup of water, bring to a boil, and reduce the flame.
  4. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  1. Sprinkle garam masala and chopped coriander leaves on top.
  2. Serve hot with paratha, roti, or steamed rice.
