  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – as needed

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • Salt – to taste

For Cooking:

  • Oil – as needed

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Sieve the wheat flour into a bowl.
  2. Add salt and oil, then knead into a soft dough using enough water.
  3. Cover and rest the dough for at least 20 minutes.

Step 2: Cook the Dal

  1. Soak moong dal for 1 hour. Drain the water.
  2. Cook the dal in 1 cup water until soft but not mushy.

Step 3: Prepare the Filling

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida, let them splutter.
  2. Add cooked dal, salt, turmeric powder, and red chilli powder.
  3. Cook on medium flame until the mixture becomes dry.
  4. Let the stuffing cool completely.

Step 4: Assemble the Paratha

  1. Divide the dough into small balls. Roll one into a small puri.
  2. Place some dal stuffing in the center, gather edges, and seal.
  3. Gently roll again into a thick, round paratha.

Step 5: Cook the Paratha

  1. Heat a tawa (griddle) on medium flame.
  2. Place the stuffed paratha and cook both sides with a little oil until golden brown.

Serving Suggestion

  • Serve hot with curry, pickle, or plain yogurt for a hearty meal.
  • Best enjoyed straight from the tawa for maximum flavor.
