Mahalaxmi Temple (Bandora)

Shri Mahalakshmi Temple (Bandora) – A sacred temple in Ponda dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the peaceful and benevolent form of Adi Shakti.

The Shri Mahalakshmi Temple in Ponda, Goa, is one of the most revered and culturally significant temples in the state. Dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the divine embodiment of wealth, wisdom, and prosperity, this temple is a spiritual center for Goud Saraswat Brahmins and is deeply rooted in the religious history of Goa.

Deity and Significance

The presiding deity is Shri Mahalakshmi, who is considered the “Goddess of all prosperity”. Unlike typical representations of Lakshmi seated on a lotus, the idol in this temple is unique—it shows Mahalakshmi with a linga on her head, symbolizing the fusion of Shakti (divine feminine) and Shiva (divine masculine).

This form of Mahalakshmi is revered as the “Santeri” or “Adishakti”, the original energy of creation. Devotees believe that the Goddess here is both benevolent and fierce, granting boons and protecting her devotees from all harm.

History

Originally located in Colva in Salcete taluka, the temple was relocated to Bandivade (Bandora), Ponda, in the 16th century during the Portuguese inquisition when many Hindu shrines were destroyed or converted. Ponda, under Muslim rule at that time, served as a safe haven for Hindus fleeing persecution in Portuguese-controlled areas.

The present-day temple was rebuilt in 1866 and stands today as a symbol of the community’s faith and resilience.
