Apple Jam

Making apple jam at home is a delightful way to preserve the sweet and fruity flavors of apples.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Apples:

    • Peel, core, and finely chop the apples. You can use a mix of sweet and tart apples for a balanced flavor.
  2. Cook Apples:

    • In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the chopped apples, sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  3. Bring to a Boil:

    • Over medium heat, bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Reduce Heat:

    • Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low to maintain a steady simmer.
  5. Simmer:

    • Continue to simmer the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the apples break down and the jam thickens. This may take about 30-40 minutes.
  6. Test for Doneness:

    • To check if the jam is done, place a small amount on a chilled plate. If it wrinkles and holds its shape when you push it with your finger, it's ready.
  7. Optional: Add Cinnamon:

    • If you like, add cinnamon powder to the jam for an extra layer of flavor. Stir well to incorporate.
  8. Cool and Store:

    • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the jam cool for a few minutes.

    • Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4-inch headspace. Clean the rims of the jars with a damp cloth.

  9. Seal Jars:

    • Place sterilized lids on the jars and screw on the metal bands until they are fingertip-tight.
  10. Water Bath (Optional):

    • For added preservation, you can process the sealed jars in a boiling water bath for about 10 minutes.
  11. Cool Completely:

    • Allow the jars to cool completely on a clean, dry towel.
  12. Store:

    • Once cooled, store the apple jam in a cool, dark place. Refrigerate after opening.

Tips:

  • For a smoother jam, you can puree some or all of the jam after cooking.
  • You can add spices like cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg to the jam for additional flavor.
  • This jam will keep for up to 1 year in a cool, dark place.
  • Adjust the sugar quantity based on your preference for sweetness.

Enjoy your homemade Apple Jam on toast, muffins, or as a delicious topping for desserts.
