Coconut Barfi

A rich and aromatic Coconut Barfi recipe — a traditional Indian sweet made with coconut, milk, and sugar, flavored with cardamom and perfect for festivals and celebrations.

Ingredients

For the Barfi:

  • 2 cups grated fresh or desiccated coconut
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
  • A few chopped nuts (cashews or almonds) – for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Roast the Coconut

    • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan and add ghee.
    • Add grated coconut and roast lightly for 2–3 minutes on medium heat (if using fresh coconut). Skip roasting if using desiccated coconut unless desired.
  2. Add Milk and Cook

    • Pour in the milk and mix well with the coconut.
    • Cook for 2–3 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken.
  3. Add Sugar and Stir

    • Add sugar and stir continuously.
    • The mixture will initially loosen as the sugar melts, then begin to thicken again.
  4. Cook to Desired Consistency

    • Continue stirring until the mixture forms a soft mass and starts leaving the sides of the pan.
    • Add cardamom powder and mix thoroughly.
  5. Set and Cut

    • Grease a plate or tray with ghee.
    • Pour the mixture onto it and flatten evenly using a spatula.
    • Garnish with chopped nuts (if using).
    • Allow to cool slightly, then cut into squares or diamond shapes.
    • Let the pieces cool completely before serving.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days, or refrigerate for longer shelf life.
  • Enjoy this classic sweet as a festive treat or homemade gift!
